- Production and crafts: defining objects and their context.

- Diet and foodways: archaeological traces of diet, culture, and cultural identities.

- Funerary practices and mortuary archaeology: Islamic burial customs and their archaeological evidence.

- Cultural interactions and local traditions in Islamic-period North Africa.

- Intellectual and cultural life: the role of North Africa in the transmission of knowledge, including centers of learning and manuscript production.

Seminars in the classroom. Each seminar encounter will consist of a lecture and a discussion of case studies.
