Academic English and the Art of Translation

The course is designed especially for the graduating students (year 3 of the BA program and year 2 of the MA program) who, while working on their BA/MA dissertations, will make use of contemporary British and American anthropological literature and would like to learn how to better understand it, and how to translate English terms from English to Polish and back. We will also discuss the issue of the hegemony of English in the global production of anthropological knowledge. The course is designed to teach students how to present their achievements internationally, e.g. within the Erasmus mobility, in an essay or oral presentation.

Additional information: Knowledge of Polish is also required for the course.

We will also discuss the issue of the hegemony of English in the global production of anthropological knowledge. The course is designed to teach students how to present their achievements internationally, e.g. within the Erasmus mobility, in an essay or oral presentation.

The aim of the course is thus very practical. Firstly, to help the students understand foreign academic texts and translate them into proper Polish (to be used as quotations in their work), paying attention not only to purely linguistic aspects (vocabulary of key concepts), but also to technical details (differences in conventional styles of referencing, etc.). Secondly, to give them some instructions on how to translate into English their dissertation’s title (this being also a formal obligation), its summary, etc. Moreover, some helpful instructions for preparing oral and written presentations of their work will be given: how to debate in public, how to write an abstract, an essay, or an academic application.

Additional information: Knowledge of Polish is also required for the course.

The course will touch upon the following topics:

1. Translator-traitor: Avoiding pitfalls of the Translationese.

2. Keywords in contemporary anthropology: how to understand and how to translate them?

3. Inventing a strong title for your dissertation.

4. Preparing a summary and an abstract of your thesis.

5. Reading English-language academic publications - understanding the structure and style.

6. Essentials of writing an essay/article in English (part 1) - constructing an argument, the structure of an essay/article.

7. Essentials of writing an essay/article in English (part 2) - tips, language, abstract, scope, peer-review process.

8. Style, references, and formatting: technicalities of academic writing.

9. How to write a successful grant application in English.

10. Pros and cons of using AI in writing and translating – discussion.

Course literature will be given to participants in the first class.

- przetłumaczyć z języka angielskiego na polski (i odwrotnie) podstawową terminologię nauk humanistycznych i społecznych

- K_U11 przygotować akademickie prace pisemne i wystąpienia ustne w języku angielskim w zakresie wykorzystywanych przez studenta źródeł i literatury przedmiotu P6S_UK

- K_U12 przygotować i wygłosić referat, prezentację w języku angielskim, dotyczące wybranego zagadnienia z zakresu antropologii społecznej i kulturowej P6S_UK

- K_U01 dokonać zaawansowanej analizy angielskojęzycznych tekstów antropologicznych; ocenić przydatność czytanego tekstu i zastosować go do własnych badań; zastosować poznaną teorię do innego zbioru danych empirycznych P6S_UW

Zaliczenie:

- writing a summary of one’s BA/MA thesis (or parallel research project) in English (with a proper title!)

- a test checking students' skills in academic writing

- being active in class discussions and completing the tasks and readings for each class
