A semester-long course of public speaking in English

A 30-hour, open-enrolment course for all students interested in improving their public speaking skills in English by learning the rules and good practices of speech preparation, organization, and delivery, particularly recommended for students of humanities and social sciences.

During the course, students will learn the theory and practice of effective public speaking by means of brief lectures, reading of selected chapters from a public speaking textbook, watching and reviewing public speeches, and doing practical tasks, including preparing and presenting two short public speeches

After completing the course, the students:

• will know the general rules of effective public speaking

• will understand the differences between various types of public speaking

• will be familiar with the organizational structure of public speeches and understand the function of each structural part

• will be able to prepare a speech outline and gather materials for a speech

• will understand the need to adjust the form and content of a public speech to its audience and know how to do it properly

• will understand the need to maintain coherence and cohesion of a public speech by using proper transitions and signposting

• will be able to effectively construct arguments and support a thesis

• will know the rules of effective use of visual and multimedia aids

• will know the rules of effective verbal delivery, including the use of appropriate language

• will understand the importance of body language in public speaking

• will be conscious consumers of public communication, capable of identifying good and bad practices

• will be able to use the presented rules and good practices in their own public speeches of both informative and argumentative types

Attendance is taken and no more than 2 absences are allowed.

Course credit is awarded for scoring minimum 60% of two tests of public speaking theory, two speeches and several shorter oral and written assignments.
