The course discusses primary texts that are crucial for understanding of past and present American society and politics. Each class focuses on a particular theme and a selection of primary texts that have shaped American identity and are still debated by the American public. |

The course discusses primary texts that are crucial for understanding of past and present American society and politics. Each class focuses on a particular theme and a selection of primary texts that have shaped American identity and are still debated by the American public. Among the additional, recommended materials there are history textbooks, secondary academic literature, documentaries and classic movies. In principle, the topics follow the chronology of American history but comparisons across historical epochs will be made, and the legacy of past events will be discussed. |

SKILLS 4. Learn the skills of preparing in-class presentations based on assigned and recommended readings under instructor’s supervision 5. Learn to understand and contextualize historically the primary documents 6. Distinguish the content of the primary texts and their interpretations created by scholars throughout the course of the US history 7. Acquire skills in formulating thesis, arguing for it and using the evidence in short written assignments SOCIAL COMPETENCE 8. Learn to discuss and argue in academic way |
Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
1. Regular attendance and in class discussion (23%) 2. A 2 to 4 standard page (3600 to 7200 characters) reaction paper every third week. Altogether, each student is assigned 3 reaction papers. The schedule of and guide for writing reaction papers will be announced at the beginning of the course. The paper should be turned in by email to the instructor not later than by 11AM on the day preceding a class which a given reading or movie is assigned to. (54%=3*18%) 3. A 15 minute presentation based on both the assigned and recommended readings and movies. A presentation should briefly (3-5 minutes) summarize selected readings, discuss three to five important problems/issues raised and formulate questions that would trigger a discussion. The discussion should be based on additional recommended readings and individual research (23%) |
