This course offers an introduction to cognitive archaeology - the study of past ways of

thinking through the material remains that have been excavated. Using selected readings, we

will review the current state of the discipline, the history of its development, and some key

theoretical structures. This will form the basis of a series of themed discussions enabling us to

apply these methodologies to specific instances of material culture (drawn mainly from the

Bronze Age Aegean and Ancient Near East) to unpick the cognitive processes or

developments that might be driving the creation of these objects or practices

This course introduces students to various problems of the Late Antique and Early Medieval archaeology of Syro-Palestine. The chronological span of the lecture covers the wide time span from the mid-6th century to the fall of Acre in 1291, and concentrates mainly on the settlement evolution and changing urban space of the selected cities in the region. Also of special interest is the interrogation of two major paradigms in the field of Near Eastern archaeology: the demographic boom of the 6th century and the decline/collapse of the 11th century. Additionally, students will obtain basic knowledge of the material culture of the region, including pottery, glass and numismatic records. This will be used to further explore broader issues such as communal identities and socio-economic structures of Near Eastern society.

narratives with archaeological evidence to foster a holistic understanding of this crucial

The course will incorporate a mix of lectures and hands-on data modeling sessions to provide students with a solid foundation in isotopic principles and their application in archaeological research. Students are expected to actively engage in discussions and activities throughout the duration of the course.

Skrócony opis

The main aim of this course is to introduce participants to the fundamentals of pottery of the Near East from the Early Roman to Late Ottoman periods (from the 1st to early 20th century AD). It does so through lectures, the hands-on examination of various pottery samples and the critical elaboration of selected scientific papers. In addition to that, students will be preliminarily introduced to basic quantitative methods and laboratory analyses. The main flow of the discussion during the course will oscillate around various issues related to the socio-economic significance and life cycle of pottery. The program offers participants the chance to acquire fundamental knowledge on the use of mass pottery material in the archaeological record, understand the ceramic production and distribution processes, observe the changing characteristics of pottery for all historical periods discussed, and finally gain familiarity with modern methodology of pottery studies.
